This area is a gated community located a few miles north of the famous Cancun hotel zone. This exclusive area is comprised of luxurious all inclusive hotels, a golf course, a marina, and a few private residences.
The entrance into the area has a 24-hour security gate so only residents, guests of the hotels or golf course and their employees are allowed access.
Contrary to the high rise and proximity of the hotels in Cancun, the hotels in Playa Mujeres and Costa Mujeres, and tend to be spread out. As a result, you have a more intimate and secluded feel.
Where is Playa Mujeres located on a map?
You’ll find the gated area, just north of Cancun and the Cancun hotel zone, built around the golf course, but also bordered by the beach. It is a peninsula that extends into Costa Mujeres and then ends with Isla Blanca.

The main airport used to arrive at the area is Cancun International airport. Therefore, you will then need to take an airport shuttle, private transfer, or rent a car to arrive at your hotel.

What is the beach like in Playa Mujeres?
The beach is long, white and the water is turquoise and clear right off the shore. There are no rocks and swimming access is easy. From most areas of the beach, you can see an island across the way and that is Isla Mujeres.

Well, that is a hard one to answer. To be honest, it depends on a lot of factors and nature is hard to predict. We can say that the seaweed problem has been a lot less prevalent in Playa Mujeres than the Riviera Maya with little to none.
What does it mean?
Firstly, mujeres (moo-hair-ez) means Women. And, secondly, playa means Beach. The island you see from the beach is, in fact, Isla Mujeres, which was named for its multiple statues of women found throughout the island. So, since it has a view of the island, it developed this name.
Are Isla Mujeres and Playa Mujeres the same thing?
No, Isla Mujeres is the island, only accessible via ferry. The area Playa Mujeres is driveable, and from the shores, you can see the island.
What are the best activities to do in the area?
If you are staying at a hotel in in the area, most tours will pick up from your hotel lobby. The closest activities, if you don’t want to stray too far from your home base are catamaran trips, which leave from the Amada Marina or you can golf at the Playa Mujeres Golf Course.
Do the hotels include golf at the Golf Club?
Well, yes and no. Some hotels, like Atelier, do have special packages which will include golf. The AmResorts (Dreams and Secrets) do include green fees, but there are certain extras to be paid on top of that, so although the green fee is free, you have to pay for your cart.
